Intervention Yes Or No?

When you see someone you love going the wrong way or doing the wrong things what do you do?

This is a question one of my readers asked me today. She told me a story about her friend going the wrong way and since she is her best friend she felt compelled to make her see that it is the wrong thing to do.

Eventually her friend ignored her and left her. So her question was should she continue to try and make her see that she’s going bad?

This is a good question, whether it’s our spouse, parents or kids…sometimes we stand aside and watch them do horrible decisions and we can’t do anything about it. This is agonizing.

As I looked at this picture it made me think that no matter how bad it seems, it is their life and their experience and not ours.  I truly believe that every person knows best what good for them and what is bad and if they made a bad decision it is only in our own eyes.

They see it differently.

They are like the water in the picture, they need to explore their own world and we can only stand still like the flowers, watch them drifting away in their own life path. We can be there for them to hold their hand when they need it, but we cannot enforce them to see or think the way we do.

  1. I agree with you, people are entitled to their liberty as autonomous individuals. It’s okay to remonstrate with friends, colleges, acquaintances, family members etc. ,but at no point do I think it’s okay to shove them down the ‘right’ path. If people head down the wrong one, they can learn from the experience and perhaps make a better decision next time (assuming there is one).
