Bumblebee

A bumblebee visits a flower, drawn in by the bright colours, the patterns on the petals, and the aromatic promise of sweet nectar. But there’s more to pollination than sight and smell. There is also electricity in the air.

Dominic Clarke and Heather Whitney from the University of Bristol have shown that bumblebees can sense the electric field that surrounds a flower. They can even learn to distinguish between fields produced by different floral shapes, or use them to work out whether a flower has been recently visited by other bees. Flowers aren’t just visual spectacles and smelly beacons. They’re also electric billboards.

“This is a big finding,” says Daniel Robert, who led the study. “Nobody had postulated the idea that bees could be sensitive to the electric field of a flower.”

Scientists have, however, known about the electric side of pollination since the 1960s, although it is rarely…

2013 in review

Thank you guys for a wonderful year of blogging, sharing and commenting.
Wishing you all another great year!!!

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 15,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 6 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Being in the Right Place at The Right Time

purple basil

I have this basil for some time.
According to the florist it should grow in the sun.
So I paced it in the sun. But it started to fade away.

I moved it to the shade. And again, no luck.
I kept moving it form one place to another in my garden.
Trying to understand what is best for it to bloom.

Finally I gave up.
I place it in my balcony, away from the other plants just to wait for it to die.

Suprize!
The basil bloomed within a day.
He got it’s green leaves back and flourished with stunning flowers.

I was so proud of myself 🙂

This story got me thinking about being in the right place at the right time.
How many times we feel disappointed with things we didn’t accomplish.

But maybe if we just take a step back and take a good look
We’ll see it is not the right place for them or the right time.

Maybe the right time will come later, and things will go easier.
Or maybe the right place isn’t here and we need to keep moving, to find that right place, instead of insisting on making it work.

Have a great week.
Rebecca
